Terokkar Forest Rares

There are a total of four rare spawns in Terokkar Forest. Three of them are part of the Bloody Rare Achievement, all of which I will cover in this post. The fourth rare in this zone is a bit less known about, and that is Hawkbane, a black and white striped cat that spawns in Skettis.

Like the other Outland rares these don't share a spawn timer, and I'm pretty sure they have all been nerfed to some extent as well.

Crippler is a level 65 bone golem that spawns in the southern part of Terokkar Forest. He can spawn in a few different locations including the Ring of Observance (which is in the center of Auchindoun) and Northwest, Northeast and Southeast of Auchindoun in the bone wastes. (His patrol routes are highlighted in blue on the map above.)

He seems to share the typical spawn timer as other rares in Outland, but I have read on some Wowhead comments that it may be possible to move up that timer a bit by killing broken skeletons outside of Auchindoun. How true that is I don't know, more than likely it could have been a coincidence that Crippler spawned right after killing a few skeletons for them. I've never experienced this myself.

Crippler drops one noteworthy item, and that is the Dragonbone Ring. It is a level 63 boe ring with a random enchant.

Okrek is a level 64 rare Arakkoa that can be found in Terokkar Forest in any one of the four Arakkoa Veils; Veil Skith, Veil Reskk, Veil Shienor and Veil Shalas. These areas are highlighted in red on the map above. He can be found patrolling above the ground in the tree huts, as well as on the ground.

He is a caster and doesn't hit very hard, but be careful if your taking him out and your around his level. It is possible to pull a multitude of adds when picking him up.

He drops a level 62 blue quality belt of a random armor type, and with a random enchant. The belts are Feathered Sash, Feathered Waistband, Feathered Belt and Feathered Girdle.

Doomsayer Jurim
Doomsayer Jurim is a level 64 draenei warlock who can be found patrolling on three of the roads in Terokkar Forest. He can be found patrolling the road just south of Shattrath heading down into the Bone Wastes, the one east of Shattrath heading toward Hellfire Peninsula, and the road from Tuurem heading toward Shadowmoon Valley. He patrol areas are in green on the map above.

I'm not sure if this is still the case since cataclysm, but I know back during the Burning Crusade days that if he spawned on either road outside of Shattrath he was often killed by the Shattrath City Guards. If this is still the case this would probably make him one of the more difficult rares to find for the Bloody Rare Achievement.

He drops level 62 boots, again they can be any armor type with a random enchant. The boots are Grim Slippers, Grim Boots, Grim Greaves and Grim Sabatons.

Zangarmarsh Rares

There are three rares that spawn in Zangarmarsh. All three of them are needed for the Bloody Rare Achievement. NPCScan Overlay does a pretty decent job indicating where they can all be found, but again isn't 100% accurate. I fine-tuned the map a little below.

These mobs don't share a spawn timer (I've often times found one right after another), and have all been nerfed to some extent.

Marticar is a level 63 fen strider that spawns and patrols in three different locations in Zangarmarsh. NPCScan overlay is just about dead on for this guy. I have highlighted his patrol area in light blue on the map above.

Marticar used to be an extremely difficult to kill elite back during the Burning Crusade era. I remember finding him back then when I was leveling my first warrior. I was so excited to find a rare I just ran in and BLAM! It was a quick death at least. He has been nerfed since then, and now my cat could probably kill him by walking across my keyboard.

He's very easy to spot when he's up because he has a unique whitish pink glow to him, I also believe he is taller than the other fen striders in the area.

He drops a decent looking white and green cloak called Striderhide Cloak, which is a blue quality level 64 boe cloak with a random enchant.

Coilfang Emissary
Coilfang Emissary is a level 63 naga that can spawn in any one of the naga villages in Zangarmarsh. NPCScan Overlay shows what looks like patrol areas for her, but she doesn't actually move around once she spawns in. I have highlighted her spawn points in red on the map above.

I have only ever seen her spawned in underneath one of those little naga huts when she is up. She is easy to spot, and stands out from other naga in the area because of her bright pink color. I would also like to point out that she seems to be wearing (the top of) one of my favorite robes in game, the Hibernal Robe. (Perhaps she has good taste?)

When killed, she drops pants. Why she is carrying around pants when she has no legs we can only guess... The pants she drops are of blue quality, level 61, boe, can be any armor type and will have a random enchant. The four random pants (in order by armor type) are: Nagahide Leggings, Nagahide Pants, Nagascale Legguards and Nagascale Legplates (these plate pants make a nice alternative for the Imbued Plate set which look great for Transmog).

Bog Lurker
Bog Lurker is a level 63 rare bog giant. He spawns in the three different areas in Zangarmarsh where tribes of broken ones reside. His patrol routes are highlighted in green on the map above and NPCScan Overlay is pretty spot on for him.

He's rather large, so he's easily noticeable when he's up. He also sometimes does a knock-back so be careful if you are taking him out near a bunch of other mobs. Other than that, he's pretty much a big pushover.

He drops blue quality, boe level 61 shoulders of a random armor type with a random enchant. The four shoulders (in order of armor type) are: Bog Mantle, Bog Spaulders, Bog Epaulets and Bog Pauldrons.

Hellfire Peninsula Rares

I should have written about these rares earlier, but I've just been so distracted by all the fun rare hunter pets I've been taming recently. Now that I've gotten that out of my system (at least for a little while) I'll be paying more attention to getting these posts done. I'll be adding all of the Outland rares by zone in the next few weeks, even the ones not required for the Bloody Rare Achievement.

There are three rare spawns that can be found in Hellfire Peninsula and they are all part of the Bloody Rare Achievement. NPCScan overlay does a pretty good job of showing where they patrol, I do want to point out however that the overlay is not 100% correct. I have highlighted the overlay with patrol routes that are a little bit more accurate on the map below.

These rares do not share a spawn timer, and its even possible for more than one to be up in the zone at a time. All of them are also quite trivial for of level toons, and especially trivial for people decked out in boa gear.

Mekthorg the Wild
Mekthorg the Wild is a level 61 rare fel orc who spawns in Hellfire Peninsula and patrols in four different locations (indicated in blue on the map above). Three of the patrol areas are close to Hellfire Citadel and the other is a path around Zeth'Gor. On NPCScan overlay it shows two separate locations for him, however he actually patrols four areas. I went over the NPCScan overlay and highlighted the locations where he patrols with brighter colors. He will not move between the patrol areas once spawned in.

He drops a blue quality boe level 60 chest piece that can be any armor type with a random enchant.  The cloth one is called Demonweave Raiment, the leather one Demon-Cured Tunic, the mail one Demon-Forged Hauberk, and the plate one, Demon-Forged Chestguard.

Fulgorge is a level 62 rare crust buster which has three different patrol routes in Hellfire Peninsula. These areas are indicated in red on the map above. The NPCScan overlay for this guy is pretty darn close. He can also be quite difficult to find when he's up, and I absolutely recommend using some rare finding add-on to help find him. He is so difficult to find because he is traveling under the ground. The only indication that you'll get that he's up (other than a notification from an add-on) are large crumbling deep red stones moving around on the surface. The normal crust busters in the area also have rocks and earth moving around to indicate that they are there, but theirs are a light tan color, smaller in diameter, and they don't get tossed as high above the ground.

Fulgorge drops a blue quality boe level 62 pair of gloves that can be any armor type with a random enchant. The cloth gloves are called Rockwurm Hide Handwraps, the leather ones Rockwurm Hide Gloves, the mail ones Rockwurm Scale Gauntlets and the plate ones are Rockwurm Plate Handguards.

Vorakem Doomspeaker
Vorakem Doomspeaker is a level 62 rare demon that can be found patrolling in any one of four different locations in Hellfire Peninsula. These four areas are shown in green on the map above. The specific locations are: the Pools of Aggonar, between Invasion Point: Annihilator and Forge Camp: Mageddon, and The Legion Front (north and south of the road leading to the Dark Portal).

He is pretty obvious when he's up because he really stands out from the demons around him. He has a greenish color and he is much larger than those around him. For me he was one of the hardest rares to find in Outland because he spawns in high traffic areas where people tend to be questing.

He drops a blue quality level 60 boe helm of a random armor type with a random enchant. The cloth helm is called the Legion Crown, the leather one is the Legion Headguard, the mail one is the Legion Coif, and the plate one is called the Legion Helm.

I put a poll up a couple of weeks ago asking people what addon they use to track rares or if they even use one at all. I've gotten a few responses so far, and I'm noticing a trend in the answers. Most people use NPCScan, roughly 20% use SilverDragon and about 10% haven't used any addons at all to find rares. I'm going to leave this poll up for a while, and I'm sure the numbers will change a bit, but ultimately I got what I was looking for.

I honestly thought there would be a few more people using SilverDragon than there are. Those of you out there who aren't using SilverDragon or any addons at all to find rares I'm going to tell you here a few reasons why you should consider giving this addon a try.

First of all, I am not nearly as familiar with SilverDragon as I am with NPCScan, but I have been using it for the past few months and I feel like I've gotten a pretty good handle on it. Let me start off by saying I currently use both NPCScan and SilverDragon. For me they each have their purpose. NPCScan has a wonderful overlay that you can download with it that shows where certain rares can be found that is very close to being correct and it's pretty easy to figure out. If you want more info on NPCScan you can find it on this post. The rest of this particular post however is going to be devoted to SilverDragon.

Like NPCScan, SilverDragon can be downloaded from It tracks rare spawns in game, but unlike NPCScan, it tracks EVERY rare as far as I know. (That means anything under level 60 is in there too folks!) It comes with a list of all rares, and once you have the addon ready to roll all of those rares just need to be imported before SilverDragon will find them for you. In the screen shot to the right you can see the "Import Data" button under the Data Management tab. When you first download this addon and begin to use it make sure you click that before you start your rare hunting. When you click it you should see a message in your chat box along the lines of "SilverDragon_Config: Imported (number) rares."

SilverDragon will show up on your minimap, your chocolatebar, or whatever you use as a little red dragon head icon. (Shown in the screenshot below.) When you click on the SilverDragon icon it will show you all of the rare spawns that could potentailly be up in the zone you are currently in. In the screen shot below I am flying through Northern Stranglethorn Vale and there are a total of seven rare spawns. Notice how it also tells you which ones are tamable! I had not yet seen any of these rares since I last cleared my cache in this screen shot. When a rare is found it will become cached and SilverDragon will display that info.

As I'm flying through Northern Stranglethorn my SilverDragon goes off and the white text you see below scrolls up through my screen. At the exact same time I saw the white text, that box poofed into existence on the right side of my screen. According to the notification a rare named Pogeyan has been found. Notice how it says "Click to Target".

When you click that notification box SilverDragon will then attempt to target the rare. If you are moving fast (like on a flight path) it may not be able to target the mob if you have moved out of range. Otherwise you should now be able to see it on your mini map and head in for the kill (or tame).

Once the rare has been cached, you will be able to see this in your SilverDragon dropdown menu that I mentioned earlier. Notice how it now says "cached" next to tamable for Pogeyan. It will also show that Pogeyan has been cached as a rare that has been found this session (since you last logged in).

Like NPCScan, unless you clear your cache when you next log out, SilverDragon will not go off again next time you happen to be flying over him. This is because he is still "cached". For more info on how to clear your cache please see this post on NPCScan.

Unfortunatley SilverDragon doesn't have a map overlay, but for any hunters out there looking for interesting rare pets I have marked where a good chunk of them can be found already in their respective posts. Map overlay aside, I think SilverDragon has a lot going for it. The drop down list of rares in each zone is awesome in my opinion and I love how you don't have to manually add the low level rares. I definitely recommend giving it a try, even if it's just to find rares more easily while leveling a new toon. =)

Rak'shiri is a beautiful aqua colored level 53 saber cat. He can be found in Winterspring patrolling around the frozen lake area just south of Frostsaber Rock. I have marked his patrol area in red on the map below.

He drops the typical green item and a decent amount of experience for people leveling.

He is also highly desirable as a hunter pet because of his very nice coloration. If your a hunter and you are just dead set on getting a pet who looks like this and haven't had luck finding him up there is one alternative. Shy-Rotam (also level 53) can be found wandering around under Frostsaber Rock (see screenshot below). If your like me though, you'll probably come back a few times to nab the rare. =)

I've always loved the look of this guy and am very glad blizzard decided to change him back to his original color. (For a while he had the look of the white frostsabers in Winterspring.)
Tamed Rak'shiri (on the left) looking at Shy-Rotam
Rak-shiri can be found with NPCScan, but it isn't really necessary as his patrol area around the lake is quite small. If he is up you should spot him fairly quicky. If you do however choose to add it, his NPCScan ID is 10200.

I don't know much about his spawn timer but he has been up a few times as I've come through the area.

Swift Forest Strider and Lost Torranche

Violet, the Swift Forest Strider & Lost Torranche at the Darkmoon Faire
So I know this isn't a rare spawn, but I just had to share anyway. I loved this screenshot so much I submitted it to WoW Insider and apparently they liked it too, because they used it for their Around Azeroth Column today. Here is a link to the article:

I've been riding around on this sexy new mount, the Swift Forest Strider, for the past few days and I'm loving it. Not just because he's basically a big purple chicken, but partly because I found an incredibly cool purple chicken hunter pet for him to hang with.

First of all let me tell you a little about the mount in case you weren't aware of where it comes from. The Swift Forest Strider and the Darkmoon Dancing Bear were two new mounts introduced in patch 4.3 with the revamped Darkmoon Faire. To purchase the mounts you will need 180 Darkmoon Prize Tickets, which can be earned from doing the Darkmoon Faire Dailies, profession quests at the Faire and from items that drop while doing pvp, kill counts, and of-level dungeons and raids while carrying a Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide. It should take you at least two Months of doing just about everything to get either mount. For more detailed info on how to obtain tickets and the mount check out WoW Insider's Guide to the new Darkmoon Faire.

Now, a little about my mount's fancy friend. Lost Torranche is the purple and green tamable tallstrider that you see in the screenshot above. He is the only one in this color that I know of that is currently tamable in game, and he matches perfectly with the Swift Forest Strider Mount. These pretty birds are level 70, and can be found on the floating Island called Sorrow Wing Point just south of Terokkar Forest. I highlighted the island in red on the map below.

Also, for your viewing pleasure I have fraps'd myself taming said purple tallstrider in the video below.
